Stay connected

When your loved one moves into Wing Kei, it becomes their home and you become part of the Wing Kei family. Family visits are integral to resident wellbeing—your presence helps everyone stay connected and feel loved. Families are our greatest supporters, always showing up by volunteering time, participating in fundraising events, and being part of discussions. Residents and families complete our Wing Kei family.

In the continuing care funding model, the cost of care (nursing, therapeutic) is assessed based on the complexity of resident needs and provided by the provincial government. Residents pay an accommodation fee, the rate of which is set by the provincial government, for room and board expenses. The funding model does not include resident experience enhancements or capital expenditures. We rely on donors for these expenses and most of our donors are past or present family.

A love that remains

Mrs. Zhu comes to Wing Kei often. Sometimes she arrives in the quiet of the morning. Sometimes she comes when the day is almost done.

Her husband, Mr. Zhu, has lived at Wing Kei for years. Alzheimer’s has slowly taken away many words and many responses. Some days he seems far away. Still, she sits with him.

Mr. and Mrs. Zhu have been together for more than fifty years. They built a life, followed their family to Canada after retirement, and faced the challenges that came with illness. Mrs. Zhu tried to care for him at home as long as she could, until she realized he needed more help than one person could give.

At Wing Kei, she found something precious: patient care, gentle hands, and a place where Mr. Zhu is treated with dignity. On difficult days, staff reassure her that he will be cared for well. Over time, that reassurance became trust.

Mrs. Zhu still comes almost every day. She may not always get a response from him. Mr. Zhu may not always recognize her. But she sits with him anyway.

At Wing Kei, she knows that love is not alone.
